Effects of Ice Water Extraction on Essential Oils

Samual Adam – CNA Stores

Background:

Ice water hash was first discovered and popularized in the 1980’s by Sadu Sam, Mila Jansen and has been a popular method of extraction ever since. Today it’s the most popular method for producing solventless extracts like hash and rosin. While the method of extraction has been well documented, what happens to the essential oils (terpenes) has not. The goal of this study is to understand what happens to cannabis essential oils (terpenes) through the process of ice water extraction.

Methods:

To understand what the effects ice water extraction has on essential oils, a starting flower sample for each strain was taken for terpene analysis. Using the results, a terpene profile is generated with 23 different terpene and terpenoid compounds. Ice water extraction was performed on each strain separately. Post process samples of wet flower, hydrosol solution, and trichomes were taken. The samples were tested for the same terpene analysis and profiles generated. Results from the initial flower were compared to post process samples to determine where the cannabis essential oils went.
