Addressing Data Manipulation in Lab Testing: Challenges and Solutions

Yasha Kahn – MCR Labs

Intro:

Recent investigations have unveiled a growing concern in the cannabis industry: the manipulation of THC values in laboratory testing. Such practices threaten not only the credibility of the sector but also consumer health. This presentation aims to explore the depth of this problem, its exposure through open data, and potential remedies.

Methods:

We employed a data-driven approach, analyzing publicly available lab test results across multiple states. Our method involved statistical comparisons to identify anomalies and outliers in THC values. Furthermore, we examined states with open data policies and assessed the impact of transparency on lab testing integrity.

Conclusions:

Our analysis revealed a distinct pattern of THC value manipulation in several states. Interestingly, states that have adopted transparency by making their testing data public have seen a significant reduction in such discrepancies. The external scrutiny, made possible by open data, led to the identification and subsequent closure of labs involved in deceptive practices.4. Discussion:
The findings underscore the value of transparency in deterring unethical practices. Open data, coupled with external scrutiny, can play a pivotal role in upholding the credibility of lab testing. Furthermore, regulatory measures, including transparent off-the-shelf testing and penalties for fraudulent practices, can further safeguard the integrity of the cannabis testing industry.
